My name is Kylie Kilmer, and I am the summer 2012 intern for Susan Crisp.
I graduated high school from Herington High School in Herington, KS. I come from a small community and graduated with only 35 people.
I continued on to junior college at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, KS. I was on scholarship there for athletic training which paid for books and tuition.
After junior college I transferred to Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. It was there that I was introduced to the world of Therapeutic Recreation. My degree is in Recreation with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. I also have a minor in psychology. I took classes for departmental honors and was nominated for the Golden Gorilla Award my junior and senior year and the Outstanding Senior Award my senior year.
At PSU I was also part of a group called Natural Ties. This group is dedicated to partnering students and people in the community with intellectual disabilities. We planned social activities for everyone to participate in, and we built friendships that changed our lives forever. I was elected President of Natural Ties my senior year.
As part of our degree requirements, we must do an internship for a minimum of 14 consecutive weeks under a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). After viewing Susan's post on the NCTRC website, I called her up, and here I am!
I have only been here a little over a week, but I am definitely excited to be here! There are learning opportunities around every corner, and I look forward to see what comes next.
The property offers privacy, freedom to roam, and excellent views all around. This is definitely a change from Kansas but in a good way!
